In a 2006 interview broadcast on National Public Radio in the United States, Canadian film director Mary Harron discussed her 2005 movie, "The Notorious Bettie Page", which for the record is In my opinion, a well-made production portraying the legendary 1950's fetish and S&M model Bettie Page in a relatively positive light. During the interview, Ms. Harmon described in detail her understanding (as a film director) of the subject matter which included filming actress Gretchen Mol (playing Bettie) dressed in extremely tight corsets, towering in high lace-up leather boots while wielding a whip or being personally subjected to various forms of bondage. Based on my own personal observations and experiences over the years, most film makers (who are not enthusiasts) typically don't get it. A couple of exceptions are John Samson's 1977 documentary "Dressing for Pleasure" and as I mentioned in my "The Rainwearist blog" a couple of weeks ago, Barbet Schroeder's ground breaking film Maitresse. Fetishism and especially rubber fetishism is about desire, passion and personal preferences. Therefore a total understanding of the subject is preferable if you wish to fulfill the wants and desires of a rubber loving partner. On the other hand, if you're making a movie or television documentary, an understanding and appreciation of the subject is a prerequisite and especially if you are going to ask strangers to actually pay to see the finished project. Interestingly, today, privately produced video clips posted on YouTube featuring rubberwear and other fetish specialty wear can provide visitors with a unique insight into the current worldwide fetish scene. The challenge is knowing when and where to look on You Tube before the clip is taken down. Back in the 1950's when Bettie Page modeled for photographers, Irving Klaw and John Willie (who most definitely understood the subject matter) fetish content was only available in mail-order magazines and 8mm films. To make matters worse, both photographers and publishers were constantly in fear of being prosecuted by the authorities for producing what was considered then to be absence material. While those days (in most parts of the world) are thankfully over, the challenge for enthusiasts and collectors today is finding new and original content produced by people who truly understand and appreciate the subject of rubber fetishism.
Over the past fifty years, enthusiasts of dressing for pleasure in rubberwear and rubber rainwear have seen many changes, some good and some not so good. Certainly tastes and attitudes have changed over the years with younger enthusiasts gravitating today towards the club and fantasy latex rubberwear scene, while older enthusiasts have continued to embrace rubber rainwear (mackintoshes and capes) and to a greater extent, the 'heavy rubber scene' which includes total enclosure (dressed head-to-toe in latex rubber suits, bags and inflatables), restriction and bondage (placed in a latex rubber straight jacket or arm binder) and of course, latex rubber hoods and masks (which includes gasmasks and protective wear). Clearly, the majority of rubber enthusiasts today (based on my own research) have elected to keep their personal interest in rubber and rubber rainwear firmly behind closed doors with fewer prepared to openly discuss their devotion to this totally impermeable and highly sensual material. Twenty years ago, I was living just outside London. Frequently, I would wear my tightly belted shiny black rubber mackintosh to work in the West End, travel back home on the train that night still wearing my mackintosh and later that evening go for a quick drink at the local pub, with my husband, again still wearing my mackintosh. All the while knowing that I had pleased both my husband and (based on the number of smiles, nods and occasional compliments received during the course of the day,) many other rubber mackintosh enthusiasts. While I no longer live in England, I very much doubt that my shiny black rubber mackintosh would attract the attention and admiration that it did twenty years ago if I traveled up to London today. A sad but true fact. In my personal opinion, part of the joy in Dressing for Pleasure in rubber and rubber rainwear is being able to share and above all, enjoy 'the rubber experience' with the one you love. This means being willing to dress in a rubber mackintosh and rubber boots and go for a long walk on a wet winter's day, or participate in a heavy rubber dressing for pleasure session in the privacy of ones own home. With fewer print publications covering the rubber scene today and many websites choosing to feature images of models dressed in latex rubber often participating in 'hard core' sexual acts (often illegal to view online in many countries), it is difficult to predict how the print and online media will serve the needs of rubber enthusiasts over the coming years. Consequently, if you do not have a partner willling to embrace and participate in your passion for rubber, life may become a little more lonely.
The sole objective of Rubberist Life is to generate a weekly conversation on the subject of dressing for pleasure in rubber fashions and leisure wear. It is my intention to make Rubberist Life a truly rubber enthusiast oriented website, and with that in mind welcome your emails, letters, photos and drawings detailing your experiences, and observations relating to rubber, latex and rainwear. Naturally, all communications are held in the strictest confidence and never published in any form without prior consent. At this time, I have not included the option for visitors to post comments or suggestions on the website preferring that all communications be sent via my personal email kristine@rwmedia.com or rubberistlife@gmail.com. Rubberist Life features only amateur produced content which included photographs and video often taken on the spur of the moment and without any prior planning, or use of high tech cameras or studio facilities. Case in point, this week I have posted a video clip taken back in 2010 featuring yours truly in a custom-made latex rubber mistress dress, custom-made SBR mackintosh from Storm Clouds and rubber vacuum (breathplay) hood from Remawear acquired back in the 90's. This video was a fun afterthought taken after a romantic DFP session. Accompanying the nine minute long clip are over seventy snap shots taken from the video. Not the best production quality but hopefully worth watching if you are into 'restrictive rubber macking'.
If your appreciation (and possibly devotion) to rubber mackintoshes and capes is accompanied by a similar passion for rubber hoods and masks, including gasmasks and other rubber protective wear, the return of RubberistLife may be very good news. Over the coming weeks, this website will begin publishing both archive and later in the year new (never seen before) photos and videos featuring rubber mackintoshes, rubber hoods and masks, rubber boots and waders and other latex rubber fashion and leisure wear items including total enclosure outfits. This first set of images featuring "Macs & Masks" will be available on Tuesday, January 17, followed by additional sets every couple of weeks. As always, I welcome suggestions and comments from enthusiasts regarding this website and encourage the submission of ideas for future rubber/rainwear wardrobe purchases and photo/video shoots.

What's in a rubberists wardrobe? It's a fair question for any one to ask who is personally interested in dressing for pleasure in rubberwear and would like to know what fellow rubber enthusiasts like to wear behind closed doors or in a private and secluded setting. Based on my own personal observations over the years, the answer is a very broad range of rubber wear ranging from intimate latex rubber under garments, to heavy total enclosure rubber suits and everything in-between. It's not to hard to imagine that the average rubberist likes to dress in a tight fitting latex rubber cat suit, hood or gas mask and rubber hip waders (and many almost certainly do.) But there is also a contingency out there of dedicated rubber enthusiasts who collect and enjoy only one or possibly two items of rubber wear. Which in my opinion still qualifies them as a rubber enthusiast (rubberist.) Carrying out an un-scientific analysis of email's received over th past ten years, I have come to the conclusion that rubber boots and waders are extremely popular, closely followed by latex rubber gloves which seem to have a universal appeal around the world. Intimate latex rubber wear, including underwear, nightwear and stockings are also popular with dresses, skirts and blouses following close behind. The latex rubber cat suit is without question or doubt still a popular item as are latex rubber vac beds, sleeps sacks along with other items of restrictive rubberwear. Personal favourites of mine, rubber mackintoshes and capes are still popular with many enthusiasts and still an integral part of many rubberists wardrobe. As attitudes and tastes change over the coming years, it will be interesting to see what is in a rubberists wardrobe in ten, twenty, or even fifty years time. Only time will tell.
